A driveway rarely wears out. It gets dirty, the jointing sand washes away and the colour flattens off — and all three of those are reversible. Cleaning, re-sanding and sealing costs a fraction of digging the drive up and laying a new one, and takes a day rather than a week.
Almost every drive we are called out to can be saved. Block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac, resin and natural stone are all designed to last decades, and what makes them look finished is usually sitting on top of the surface rather than wrong with it.
The honest exception is structural damage. If the base beneath has moved, if blocks have sunk into ruts, or if tarmac has broken up rather than faded, cleaning will make it look better but it will not fix the cause. We will tell you that when we quote rather than after we have taken your money.
The green-black film that makes a drive look permanently wet. It thrives in shade and holds water, which is why the north-facing side of a house is always the worst. It is also the main reason a drive gets slippery in winter.
On block paving the sand between the blocks does the structural work. Rain, brushing and pressure washing all pull it out, and once it has gone the blocks can rock and tip. Cleaning without replacing that sand leaves the drive looking better and holding together worse.
They do not grow through the blocks. They root in the joints, and in doing so they lift the sand and open the gaps further, which lets more in.
Tarmac greys off and imprinted concrete loses its tint because UV breaks down the surface layer and the original sealer wears through. Cleaning alone will not bring the colour back — that needs recolouring or resealing.
These sit in the surface rather than on it, so they need treating before the wash rather than blasting harder afterwards.
Four jobs go by the name “driveway cleaning” and they are not the same piece of work. Knowing which one you need is most of the value in getting a quote.
Right for concrete, flags, paths and patios where the surface is sound and only dirty. One visit.
The standard job on block paving. The joints are cleared, the surface washed, and fresh kiln-dried sand brushed back in so the blocks lock together again.
Adds a sealer that holds the new sand in place, slows the weeds and keeps the colour longer. It is the difference between a drive that looks good this summer and one that still looks good in three years.
For faded tarmac and imprinted concrete, where the colour has gone rather than been covered up. The surface is cleaned, then a tinted coating puts the colour back.
Most domestic drives are a single day. Sealing needs dry weather and is usually a second visit once the surface has dried out fully.
Everything moveable comes off the drive. Weeds and any oil staining are treated first so they are dealt with rather than spread around.
A rotary surface cleaner rather than a hand lance. It works at a consistent distance across the whole surface, which is what stops the striping and the blown-out joints that a lance leaves behind.
Kiln-dried sand brushed into every joint and vibrated down where the surface calls for it, so the blocks are locked rather than just filled.
Once the surface is genuinely dry. Sealing damp paving traps the moisture underneath and clouds the finish, so this waits for the weather rather than the schedule.
We quote per job rather than by the square metre, because two drives of the same size can be very different amounts of work. What moves the number:
